How to start a business directory website on WordPress, in four steps: choose your listing types, open the add listing form, collect reviews and turn on claims. Each step is shown on a real WordPress site.
A business directory website needs three things. Somewhere to keep the listings, with the right details for each kind of business. A way for business owners to add and update their own. And trust. Reviews from customers, and proof that an owner is who they say they are. On WordPress, that comes down to four steps. Choose your listing types. Open the add listing form. Collect reviews. And turn on claims. Here is each one, on a real site. Step one. A listing type decides which questions a business answers. A restaurant is asked for its cuisine. A hotel or a clinic is asked different things. The common types are ready to use. And you can build your own, with text, choices, dates, a photo gallery, opening hours and a map location. Step two. This is the form a business owner sees. They choose the type first. Then the form walks them through, one step at a time. They can save a draft and come back to it. Afterwards the listing sits in their own dashboard on your site, where they edit it whenever something changes. One piece of advice before you open. Do not start with an empty directory. Add the first listings yourself, or import them from a spreadsheet file. Then invite the owners to take them over. Steps three and four are what make them say yes. Step three. Every business page has a reviews tab. Customers give a star rating and write what happened, and the owner can reply. Step four. A listing that you added shows a claim button. The real owner clicks it and sends their proof. The claim arrives in your admin, and the dashboard shows how many are waiting. Approve one, and the listing belongs to the business from then on. You set the rules for all of it. Whether a new listing goes live at once or waits for you. Whether reviews do the same. And how many days a listing runs before it expires. Once those four steps are in place, the directory works without you. Owners keep their own listings current. Each business page carries structured details that search engines read. And the local businesses have accounts on your site, not on a platform. Compare that with typing every listing yourself. Yours go out of date in months. Theirs are updated by the owner. Nobody answers the reviews, or the owners reply. You chase every change, or the changes come to you. And it grows as fast as you can type, or it grows on its own. Every business in your area is already listed somewhere. The longer you wait, the more of them claim a page on a site that is not yours. WB Listora is the directory plugin for WordPress. Take step one this week. Choose your listing types. Get WB Listora. The link is below.
